Darolutamide approved for nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer

Sometimes after finishing prostate cancer treatment, men get an unwelcome surprise: their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels creep higher, suggesting tumors too small to be seen lurk somewhere in the body. This leads to several options. Doctors can continue to monitor a man’s condition with imaging scans. Or, given the anxiety associated with rising PSA, they might try to lower the levels with chemically “castrating” drugs that inhibit testosterone, a hormone that makes prostate tumors grow faster. Following that treatment, called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), PSA generally declines and may become undetectable. But what if PSA climbs further despite ADT’s inhibiting effects on testosterone? This condition is called nonmetastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC). It’s called “nonmetastatic” because cancer hasn’t spread in a way that’s detectable with

Finding Stillness and Gratitude In a Heart Attack

If there is one thing I’ve learned in my journey with Marjorie, it is that life can change in the blink of an eye. No matter how much we plan or perfectly color code our calendars, life happens. And with adversity comes miracles. My family and I are counting our blessings extra this Thanksgiving as we received a miracle that could only be written by God Himself… Sunday morning, I headed off to my beloved homeland of Louisiana for an awesomely busy week of talks, events and fundraisers. I was beyond thrilled to host an Alliance event in Baton Rouge, which would raise funds to create a free clinician led support group in my hometown. My ultimate pay it forward dream and mission was finally happening

Dental news you’ve missed this week

Missed out on this week’s dental news? No problem, here’s what happened over the past seven days… Labour promises free dental check ups if elected Labour is promising to scrap charges and offer free dental check ups if it wins the next general election. All band one treatment costs will be dropped under the plans, including check ups, scale and polish and X-rays. In addition, Labour says it would fund corrections to fillings, dentures and braces, as well as fluoride varnishes and plastic sealants. The party believes this will cost the NHS £450million a year. The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed the move and called on all parties to help improve dental patient access. Adults in England unable to get an NHS dental appointment

Libella Gene Therapeutics to Run a Patient Paid Trial of Telomerase Gene Therapy

After Bioviva Science, Libella Gene Therapeutics is the second company to take a run at commercializing telomerase gene therapy treatments for human use. Telomerase is the enzyme responsible for lengthening telomeres, repeated DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes, though it may have other roles. Telomeres are a part of the mechanism that limits the number of times that a somatic cell can replicate. Telomeres shorten with each cell division, and when too short they trigger programmed cell death or cellular senescence followed by destruction by the immune system. Ordinary somatic cells in humans do not express telomerase; it is only present in stem cells, which can replicate indefinitely to supply tissues with new somatic cells with long telomeres. This split between a small privileged stem cell

Tiny devices made of DNA detect cancer with fewer false alarms

A new cancer-detecting tool uses tiny circuits made of DNA to identify cancer cells by the molecular signature on their surface. The circuits work by attaching to the outside of a cell and analyzing it for proteins that are more abundant on some cell types than others. The devices distinguish cell types with higher specificity than previous methods, giving researchers hope their work could improve diagnosis, or give cancer therapies better aim.

Dogs as a Model of Human Aging

Dogs are an interesting species when it comes to the study of aging. Firstly they are much closer to human metabolism and cellular biochemistry than mice, and secondly selective breeding has generated lineages with a very wide range of sizes and life spans. Thirdly, they occupy a good compromise position in the range of life spans, study cost, and similarity to humans. Mice live short lives, so studies are rapid and comparatively cheap, but there are sizable, important differences between mouse and human biochemistry. Humans live so long that most studies of aging are simply out of the question. Even in non-human primates that live half or less as long as we do, a study of aging and calorie restriction has lasted for decades, and few

AMPED Hydrate: Naturally Better Hydration

Staying hydrated is key to feeling and performing your best, but water isn’t always enough. AMPED Hydrate is a refreshing, natural electrolyte drink that replenishes nutrients lost throughout the day and during exercise. Good hydration is one of the easiest and most effective ways you can support your overall health, but there is more to optimal hydration than water alone. Electrolytes are minerals that perform many essential functions in the body. They control muscle contraction, play a critical role in regulating fluid balance, and help the body absorb water more efficiently (1). Your body loses water and electrolytes throughout the day, especially during exercise or any time you sweat. Drinking water can restore fluids but doesn’t replace depleted electrolytes. Both water and electrolytes are essential for
